My personal favorite part about Breakaway is that they continue to put a huge spotlight on the local talent in each city. This year they are set to bring in some of my favorite musical taste-makers August 24-25 including Odesza, Khalid, Jaden Smith, Flosstradamus, Borgeous, and Kayzo for their main headlining acts. Last year featured headliners RL Grime, Travis Scott, Zedd, and more so you KNOW that when they decided to bring it back for a second year, they had to do it big. Prime Social Group hosed their first Breakaway Festival Grand Rapids last summer at Belknap park which was a smashing hit. This city is ALWAYS packed with phenomenal music. From the massive shows at the Intersection, 20 Monroe Live, and Van Andel Arena, to the more intimate settings at Pyramid Scheme, Billy's, Founder's, and more. Throughout the set, that approach both acted as the rallying charge and the over-the-top release that made the crowd swirl, rock and raise a swath of hands at a moment’s notice. Breakaway Grand Rapids, an annual Christian music festival, usually draws around 18,000 attendees each year. Illenium dominated the crowd from hilltop to front row. On the heels of a dynamic set from Gryffin, Illenium’s dramatic entrance set to his swelling underscore shook the ground. Still, few could even think of topping Illenium, the name on the mind of most attendees who had begun chanting for his set since festival gates opened.Īs he took the stage, the crowd had swelled to fill the standing space, clad with rainbow lights, bouncing inflatables and waves of neon. Seeing the outpouring of support and drive to bring back live music was reassuring, he said.Īnd armed with big names such as Illenium (Friday night’s headliner) and Quinn XCII (closing out Saturday), the idea of the festival’s phoenix-like revival was in the air. “It’s awesome to see all of the Michigan artists come up like that.”Īs the first day came to a close, one of those local artists, festival MC and DJ Choff of Grand Rapids, reminisced with the crowd on the chance that six months ago, Breakaway 2021 could have been another blank spot on a calendar. “It’s amazing to see how much has changed throughout COVID-19 - what artists are going where, seeing everything that doing,” he said.
