![]() ![]() The first part of the trail is going to be the toughest, elevation wise, with an increase of almost 200 feet in a quarter mile. You start the trail at just under 5,000 feet and the highest elevation you’ll reach is 6,160 feet Not bad, aye. Also, the ranger couldn't lead us all the way to the lake because of snow impeding our path - there were snow shoots along the way making it dangerous in spots as slipping in such snow might lead to a 50+ feet fall down a slope, so be sure to bring a good pair of hiking shoes/boots and walking poles. The payoff at the end being the solitude of Iceberg lake which is a great place to enjoy a packed lunch and rest your feet. The views are absolutely stunning throughout the hike and you get a little of everything in this hike - open meadows, wildflowers, Ptarmigan Falls, lush forest views, and mountain/glacial/valley views. Hikes around Lake McDonald Lodge are likely to be open. ![]() Otherwise this isn't a strenuous hike at all, just a good length at five miles out and five back. That said, trails in the valley areas are more likely to be open and safe to hike in June (That’s another issue: even if a trail is technically open, high elevation trails may not be safe if you don’t have the proper mountaineering training). The first 3/4 of the trail is a bit steep, but after that initial leg, it opens up into a meadow with spectacular views of the mountains/glaciers. Plus, traveling with a guide and a full group made the thought of seeing a bear a little less intimidating. The ranger was great, he was full of knowledge and kept the large group entertained along the way. My husband and I did this hike in late June and while the lake was still covered in snow/ice the trail was still well worth it. ![]()
